![]() Much like the Velar's acceleration, its handling is by no means sporty. The supercharged V-8 in the SV Autobiography is charismatic and powerful, but that model's high entry price puts it in an entirely different class, going up against the Porsche Macan Turbo, Mercedes-AMG GLC-class, and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The 2018 Velar P380 V-6 managed a 5.7-second run from zero to 60 mph in our testing the Velar we had in our long-term test fleet was powered by the turbocharged four-cylinder and needed 7.4 seconds to hit 60 mph. The supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 is powerful but drinks plenty of fuel and transmits a gritty song through the dash. The base 247-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is well behaved enough, but it struggles to move the Velar's substantial heft. Elsewhere, Land Rover has made more minor updates, such as making Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration across the Velar lineup and fitting the base S model with driver-assistance tech such as blind-spot monitoring, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, and SiriusXM satellite radio. We've driven it already, and it's awesome. The high-performance SV Autobiography Dynamic edition joins the lineup for 2020, powered by a rip-snorting supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 making 550 horsepower. At the end of the day, rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC-class, Audi Q5, and Porsche Macan may offer more substance, even if they can't match the Velar for style. Land Rover offers several trims and a plethora of option packages and customization choices to aid customers in designing a nearly bespoke SUV to suit their individual tastes. All-wheel drive is standard, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission that's shifted from a rotary knob on the center console that pops up when you start the ignition. But its unrefined powertrains, clumsy handling, and buggy infotainment system are all causes for pause. The Cold Climate Pack adds a heated windshield and wheel and costs $640 on all trims but the SVAutobiography, which it gets as standard equipment.Chic styling and a desirable nameplate emblazoned above its grille makes the 2020 Range Rover Velar an attractive choice in compact-luxury SUV world. The R-Dynamic HSE and SVAutobiography get all the Driver Assist features except adaptive cruise and the 360-degree camera, which cost $1,300. A Driver Assist pack with a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, high-speed emergency braking and a rear-traffic monitor costs $3,300 on both versions of the S. The SVAutobiography features diamond quilted Windsor leather 20-way seats with memory, massage, heated and cooled front seats, intelligent driveline dynamics, active sports exhaust system and SV-tuned electronic air suspension. The R-Dynamic HSE has 21-inch dark satin grey wheels, a hands-free liftgate, heated side mirrors with approach lights, Windsor leather 20-way power-adjusting seats and 17-speaker Meridian premium audio. The R-Dynamic S is mostly adds sporty styling upgrades like black exterior accents and paddle shifters. Other options can added in bundles, or Packs. The base S model has 19-inch gloss sparkle silver wheels, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, navigation, a sliding panoramic sunroof, 11-speaker Meridian premium audio, rain sensing wipers, park assist, blind spot monitoring, keyless entry and leather upholstery.
